About Auto TransformersAuto Transformers are often used to either step up or step down single or three phase line voltages to a certain voltage. A common example of the use of an auto transformer is for machines that are manufactured in Europe with a 480V input, using an Auto Transformer to convert the power requirement to 400V which is sometimes used in the United States. Auto Transformer ConstructionAuto Transformers are often constructed with a single copper wire coil common to both the primary and secondary circuits, wound around a silicone steel core. The winding has at least three electrical connection points call taps. The voltage source and the load are each connected to two taps. One tap at the end of the winding is a common connection to both source and load. Each tap corresponds to a different source or load voltage. Auto Transformer vs Isolation TransformersAuto Transformers are small and more economical to purchase per say than an equivalently isolation transformer. The different between an auto transformer and an isolation transformer is the separation of the secondary winding. An auto transformer, by using a single coil winding, will not offer protection that an isolation transformer would against voltage spikes, electrical noise or any other undesirable condition and will pass through unchecked. Equipment that susceptible to poor line conditions will not be protected. Noise and any harmonics generated by components on the secondary side will be allowed to transmit onto the main supply line. Auto Transformers should be used where only line voltage needs to be matched to protected a piece of equipment. When Not To Use An Auto TransformerAuto transformers should not be used in closed delta connections or they will introduce into a circuit a phase shift which causes higher power use. Before installing an auto transformer check with local building codes because they may be prohibit to used in certain areas because they can transmit line disturbances directly. Common Auto Transformer ApplicationsAuto transformers are also used for interconnecting high-voltage power systems and these are usually larger in size. They are also used for intermittent duty starting of motors. The motor is connected for a short time to the common winding voltage, and then connected to the full line voltage.
