Center Tap Transformer

“Center tap transformer” may be most commonly used to define two different applications.  The first is in the case of single phase applications. The second is three phase “delta connected” applications. In both scenarios, The term “center tap” is referring to the secondary (output) side of the transformer.

In either case the center tap or “neutral” to line (main connection) voltage will be half of the line to line voltage for the transformer’s secondary (output). This provides two separate circuits which operate out of phase with each other and may not be combined for increased low voltage output capacity. Each circuit will be capable of half of the output capacity of the secondary winding that they split.

Single-phase Center Tap Transformers :

Single phase transformers for use in commercial and residential building electrification are commonly configured with a center tap. This is used to divide the output or secondary voltage on a transformer to supply both low voltage distribution and a higher voltage used for powering machinery. A common variation of this scenario in the United States is single phase center tap transformers with a secondary (output) configuration of 240 with a 120v center tap (240/120v secondary). This center connection is positioned at the halfway point of the secondary winding. This center connection is referred to as the “neutral” connection.

Determining Center Tap Circuit Capacity :

An example would be a single phase transformer with a kva rating of 10. If the center tap on a transformer having a secondary voltage of 240/120v, is used to feed two 120v circuits, each will effectively have a capacity of a maximum of 5kva each. Even if one is run at a lower capacity (>5kva) the alternate may not output more than half of the overall rating. This essentially is because the output rating is based on the amount of winding material each winding half is comprised of.  

In the event that the transformer may be used to output from both the line to line main secondary circuit and one or both of the line to neutral circuits, the ratings of each powered circuit combined must not exceed the overall rating of the transformer.

Another more complex example: You have a 10kva single phase transformer with a 240/120v secondary which is powering a machine which requires 5kva 240v. We power this machine using the two main out-put lines. So far we are using up half of the capacity of this transformer. We also plan on operating 120v loads. The remaining capacity of this transformer is 5kva. Each of the circuits for 120v (each line to neutral) will have a maximum capacity each of 2.5kva remaining. The example for a three phase transformer is slightly more complex but the same rules apply.

Three-phase Center Tap Transformers :

The center tap on delta configured three phase transformers is typically used for small auxiliary loads with the main use being the three phase output which does not use the center tap connection.

Three phase center tap transformers are used commonly with a 240v delta secondary configuration and a single 120v center tap. In this case, the center tapped winding is only used on one of the three phases. This makes the rating of each of the two low voltage circuits one half each of one of the three windings. If the transformer has a three phase rating of 30kva, each phase winding has a capacity of 10kva. Being that the center tapped winding is only used on one of the three output windings, the capacity of each of the two low voltage circuits is one half each of one third of the transformer total capacity. In the scenario above, each low voltage circuit will be capable of a maximum of 5kva.

How Center Tap Transformers Work

A center tap transformer has a wire that is connected to a point half way along one of the windings of the transformer. In a transformer rectifier, with a center-tapped transformer and two diodes it can form a full wave rectifier that allows both half cycles of the AC waveform to contribute to the direct current, make its smoother than a half-wave rectifier.

Common Center Tap Transformer Applications

The most common use for a center-tapped transformer is utility power to a residence. Most lamps and small appliances run on 120 volts, but appliances like electric stoves, hot water heaters and air conditioners use 240 volts. By using a center tap transformer, the center tap is called the neutral the other two wires are called hot wires. From either hot wire to neutral you have 120V for the lights and receptacle, but from hot to hot, you have 240 available for the stove and air conditioner.  In audio power amplifiers center tap transformers are used to drive push-pull output stages. This allows two devices operating in Class B to combine their output to produce higher audio power with relatively low distortion. Design of such audio output transformers must tolerate a small amount of direct current that may pass through the winding.
