What is a Control Transformer ?A control transformer is an isolation transformer which are used generally in an electronic circuit that requires constant voltage with a low power or volt-amp rating. Control transformers are designed to provide a high degree of secondary voltage regulation for a short period overload condition, which is called or referred to as inrush. Control transformers are sometime called industrial control transformers, machine tool transformers, or control power transformers. You would select a control transformer mostly for industrial applications where electromagnetic devices such as contractors, relays and solenoids are used. They are also used in less sensitive devices where accurate secondary low voltages are essential. Control transformers are designed with high-quality insulating materials to insulate turn to turn windings, layer to layer windings, primary to secondary windings and ground. To seal the surface and eliminated moisture the control transformer is vacuum impregnated with VT polyester resin and oven cured. This fills the entire unit, providing a strong mechanical bond, and offers protection from the environment. Common Control Transformer Applications
Selecting a Control TransformerIn selecting a control transformer you will need firsthand knowledge of the specific application for the control transformer, and to understand some basic terms used in this selection process. The following should help select the right control transformer for your application. You need to determine three characteristics of the load circuit. 1. Total steady-state (sealed) VA - This is the total amount of VA that the control transformer must supply to the load circuit for an extended period of time. To determine this you add all the total steady-state VA of all devices in your control circuit. The operating VA information for these devices should be available from the manufacturers. 2. Total Inrush VA – The total amount of VA that the transformer must supply for all components or devices in the control circuit that are energized together. Careful consideration should be taken for the start-up sequence of the devices. Inrush VA data can be obtained from the device manufacturers. 3. Inrush load power factor - The inrush is difficult to calculate without detailed vector analysis of all control components. If such information is not available a 40% power factor can be utilized. Once you have all three factors, follow these steps to select the proper control transformer. Determine your primary and secondary voltage requirements, as well as the required frequency. Calculate the total sealed VA of your circuit Calculate the inrush VA by adding the inrush VA of all components being energized together. · Calculate the total inrush VA using the following formula Total Inrush VA = VA sealed + VA Inrush The above gives you basic steps on choosing your control transformer, but to insure you get the correct transformer and assistance in choosing the correct transformer call TEMCo.
