A drive isolation transformer is often used with AC and DC adjustable speed drives which generate mechanical stresses and harmonic currents beyond the design criteria of normal general purpose transformers.

Drive Isolation Transformer

Variable frequency drive and adjustable speed motor drives are very popular because they adjust the speed of induction motors by varying the frequency.  These motor drives save energy, and they are easy to control.  Motor drives also caused harmonic voltage distortion, electrical noise, and line voltage notching.  A simple, cost-effective solution to these problems is to place a drive isolation transformer in front of these motor drives.

How a Drive Isolation Transformer Works

A drive isolation transformer has grounded electrostatic shielding between and around the primary and secondary windings.  This means that there is no direct electrical connection that exists between source and load.  It also provides a million-fold decrease in the capacitive coupling involved in transferring common-mode voltage disturbance.

Drive Isolation Transformer – Reduces Harmonic Distortion

A drive isolation transformer in front of the motor reduces harmonic distortion, diminishes line voltage notching, and attenuates electrical noise.  A drive isolation transformer, on a three phase application, reduces harmonic distortion by eliminating the triplen harmonics.  The drive isolation transformer trapped the harmonic produced by the motor drive in the delta primary of the transformer.  The transformer has to be K-rated to handle the heat which is generated by the trapped harmonics in the primary.  This reduction of harmonic distortion improves the factor and also reduces the harmonic effects on other loads.

Drive Isolation Transformer – Diminishes Line Voltage Notching

The drive isolation transformer reduces the notching effects that motor drives cause. The typical motor drive uses a rectifier to convert AC to DC.  Rectifiers are made up of diode bridges or silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR) which creates a non-linear current waveform.  There a brief moment when more than one SCR is on at the same time causing a momentary short.  This short imposes mechanical stress on the upstream transformer and causes a distorted voltage waveform as a notch. The number of notches per cycle is equal to the number of pulses or SCR’s in the circuit.  This notching has serious effect on equipment that is connected to the same circuit as the motor drive.  Notching causes controllers to malfunctions, synchronization problems, CPU’s to shut down, UPS output voltage oscillation, and some digital clocks to run fast.

Drive Isolation Transformer – Attenuates Electrical Noise

A drive isolation transformer takes care of electrical noise by isolation and shielding.  On a drive isolation transformer the secondary is isolated from the primary providing a good amount of noise attenuation.  A multiple shielded drive isolation transformer provides excellent noise attenuation to help prevent data disruption in digital electronic equipment.
