The TP-1 Standard
In 1996, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) established the TP-1 standard to designate high-efficiency transformers. This standard calls for a minimum of 97% efficiency for single and three phase, low-voltage dry-type distribution transformers (depending on size). In order to be TP-1 rated, transformers must pass NEMA’s highly rigorous TP-2 testing procedure. Some states have mandated TP-1 rated transformers for commercial and industrial facilities, and rising energy costs and environmental concerns should prompt other states to follow suit.

Energy Star
The Energy Star label was created by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy to help consumers identify products that excel in energy efficiency and environmental protection. In 1998, the EPA established the Energy Star C&I Transformer Program to encourage the production of extremely efficient low voltage commercial and industrial transformers.
