Harmonic Cancellation OverviewIn three-phase power distribution the harmonics are the most predominant cause of distortion and heating problems. These harmonics will cause standard distribution transformers to overheat, burn neutral conductors and naturally fail at the worst possible time. Harmonic Cancellation What is Harmonic DistortionHarmonic distortion is the odd order frequencies of the fundamental 60 Hertz (or 50 Hz, or 400 Hz depending on the intended power frequency). Nonlinear loads which are so popular now are the main reason we have harmonics. Nonlinear loads include such things as lighting ballasts, computers, motor drives and controls, communications equipment and other DC-powered loads. In a three-phase distribution system, the 5th and the 7th harmonics are the most predominant causes of distortion and heating problems. Harmonics slowly erode the electrical environment causing high maintenance, premature failures and some cases fire. Harmonic cancellation can be accomplished through a variety of techniques and applications. Solutions To Achieve Harmonic CancellationHarmonic Cancellation with Active Filters and Power Factor Correction CapacitorsAn active filter can be used for harmonic cancellation but this can be very expensive and complex. Active filters digitally create and control reactive power to cancel the harmonics. Power factor correction capacitors were thought to work to take care of harmonic distortion but can make the matter worse. Power factor correction capacitors need to be detuned requiring some engineering and a specially adapted custom design. Harmonic Cancellation With Phase Shifting TransformersThe most economical and easy was to take care of harmonic cancellation is performed with a phase-shifting transformer or what is some times called a harmonic canceling transformer. These transformers are a new power product to take care of mitigating harmonic problems in electrical distribution systems. They have built-in electromagnetic technology designed to remove high neutral current and the most harmful harmonics from the 3rd through 21st. Harmonic cancellation transformers attack the harmonics head-on and are clear and easy to understand. This transformer works on the principal of taking harmonics generated from separate sources, then shifting one source of harmonics 180 degrees with respect to the other and then combining them together. This results in harmonic cancellation. Take a sinewave, which contains the 5th and 7th order harmonics with the waveform. The transformer shifts the 5th harmonic 150 degrees and shifts the 7th harmonic 210 degrees. When the shifted harmonics return back onto the line, the shifted 5th will be approximately 30 degrees away from a perfect 180 degrees with respect to the non-shifted 5th. The shifted 7th will be 30 degrees from 180 degree with respect to the non-shifted 7th. This is an excellent blend for these two most corruptive harmonics. The shifted 5th harmonics are opposite in phase and cancel each other, as do the shifted 7th harmonics.
