Instrument transformer

Instrument transformers are used to step-down current or voltage to measurable values. They are used in a variety of power monitoring and measurement applications to provide standardized, useable levels of current or voltage. There are several classes of instrument transformers. ANSI class devices are for monitoring power which requires high accuracy and minimum phase angle error. Commercial class devices are used for low power current monitoring. A split core instrument transformer has a hinge and locking snap that allows attachment without interrupting the current-carrying wire. Multi-ratio transformers are used in three-phase systems to measure current or voltage. Bar current instrument transformers are toroidal transformers, in which a bus bar is permanently inserted through the window of the toroid. PC mounted instrument transformers have a small footprint and are used to measure current or voltage on computer boards.

The main tasks of instrument transformers are:
 To insulate the metering circuit from the primary high voltage system
 To provide possibilities of standardizing the instruments and relays to a few rated currents and voltages
 To transform currents or voltages from a usually high value to a value easy to handle for relays and instruments

The basic construct or design of an instrument transformer is the primary winding connected to the power system and the secondary winding to the sensing and measuring equipment. Data from these devices are necessary for the operation, control and protection of the power system. The primary reason for having an instrument transformer is to provide analog information at low voltage levels, insulated from the higher system voltages.
