Isolation TransformerIsolation transformers are designed by having the primary and secondary windings physically separated from each other. The windings are insulated from each other and the output winding will be isolated or floating from earth ground, unless bonded at the time of installation. Because of this design, they provide an isolated neutral-ground reference for sensitive equipment and provide an inexpensive alternative to the installation of dedicated circuits and site electrical upgrades. Isolation Transformer UseThese isolation transformers typically have symmetrical windings, and are used to separate two circuits. This allows an AC signal to be taken from one device and fed into another without electrically connecting the two circuits. Isolation transformers are also used to block transmission of DC signals from one circuit to the other, but still allow AC signals to pass. A shielded isolation transformer is used extensively for sensitive equipment such as computers and laboratory instruments. Shielded Isolation TransformersShielded isolation transformers in many cases are preferred over standard isolation because of the extra protection it gives to sensitive and critical equipment. These transformers are designed the same way only they incorporate a full metallic shielding between the primary and secondary windings. The electrostatic shield, or sometimes called the Faraday Shield, is connected to earth ground and performs two important functions. 1. It filters voltage spikes, and has an attenuation ratio of 100 to 1. 2. It filters common mode noise.
