K Factor Transformer

In today’s industrial workplace world of solid state devices such as lighting ballasts, computers, motor drives and controls, communications equipment and other DC-powered loads have created a major problem for engineers.  Left on their own, without any type of harmonic isolation, the non-linear nature of these switched-mode devices generate harmonic currents that cause transformers and system neutrals to overheat and destroy themselves.

K factor transformers are used to deal with these harmonic generating loads.  Because harmonics generate additional heat in the transformer these K factor transformers are sized appropriately to handle this additional heat.  These K factor transformers are designed with a double sized neutral conductor and either changes the geometry of their conductors or uses more than one conductor for the coils.  The K factor transformer is made with high grade silicon steel, copper windings, and more air ducts.

The ANSI/IEEEE C57.110 has derived a system of weighting how much harmonic load currents a transformer can handle without exceeding its maximum temperature rise level.  A K factor of 1.0 indicates no harmonics, while a K factor of 50 is the harshest harmonic environment possible.  Typically a K Factor of 13 is sufficient for most applications.  K factor must be determined to calculate the right size transformer that is needed.  The Underwriters laboratory (UL) has designed a rating system to indicate the capability of transformer to handle harmonic loads.  Below you will find a typical load K factors
