Line Transformer Unique Features

Line transformers or transmission line transformers operate by transmitting energy by way of the transverse or TEM, meaning Transverse Electro-Magnetic, rather than by the coupling of magnetic flux as conventional transformers do.  The concept of transmission line transformers has been a distinct element of RF circuit design since at least 1944.

Types of Line Transformer

Typical line transformers consist of parallel wire, coaxial cable or bifilar twisted wire pairs, with the latter being the most popular.  The reason for this is the characteristic impedance can easily be determined by the wire diameter, the insulation thickness, and to some extent, the twisting pitch.  With the coaxial cable transmission line, the correct characteristic impedance for the line transformer, the high frequency bandwidth limit is reached when the cable length comes into the order of a half wavelength with the overall achievable bandwidth being about a decade.  By introducing magnetic materials such as powdered iron or ferrite to the transformer, both the low frequency limit and the high frequency limit are improved.  When high permeability ferrites are used with good quality semi-rigid coaxial cable, bandwidths of four decades or more are achievable.

Line Transformer Electric & Magnet Fields

The term transverse electric and transverse magnetic refer to a condition when the electric field or magnetic field, respectively; of a propagating wave is parallel to a boundary plane.  In the case of line transformers it is when both the electric and magnetic fields are parallel to the boundary plane and there are no longitudinal components of either field.

Transmission line transformers have been found to possess far wider bandwidth and much greater transmission efficiencies by arranging the winding to have uniform transmission line properties.  Line transformer type transformers are used widely used for matching networks for antennas and amplifiers in the HF and VHF bands, and their low losses made them especially useful in high power circuits.
