Oil Filled Transformer Defined

The majority of high voltage transformers are bathed in transformer oil and are classified as oil filled transformers.  The oil used in an oil filled transformer is a highly refined mineral oil that is stable at high temperatures.  Large transformers that are used indoors must use a non-flammable transformer liquid.

Oil Filled Transformer Types

The oil types used in oil filled transformers are usually stable silicone-based or fluorinated hydrocarbons.  Other less flammable fluids such as canola oil may be used, but all fire resistant fluids have some drawbacks in performance, cost, or toxicity compared with mineral oil.  There are different strengths among the variety of transformers that exist on the market, however losses are minimized in liquid/oil filled transformers due to the design and performance characteristics.  Oil filled transformers can operate in an overload condition of up to 30%, which makes them the most tolerant and efficient of any transformer design. 

Oil Filled Transformer Cooling

The primary reason to use oil in transformers is as a coolant agent and provides part of the electrical insulation between internal live parts.  The oil has to be stable at high temperatures so that a small short will not cause a fire.  For the larger oil filled transformers, the tank may have radiators through which the oil circulates by natural convection so it improves cooling.  These large oil filled transformers may also have fans, oil pumps and oil to water heat exchangers.  Oil filled transformers also undergo a prolonged drying process using electrical self-heating, or the application of a vacuum, or both to ensure that the transformer is completely free of water vapor before the cooling oil is introduced.  This prevents electrical breakdown under load.

Many oil filled power transformers are equipped with relays that sense gas build-up inside the transformer, which is a side effect of an electric arc inside the winding. The relay shut down the transformers and protects the transformer and prevents fires.  The oil in these transformers also helps reduce the formation of corona discharge with high voltage transformers.  By cooling the windings, the insulation will not break down as fast due to heat.  The transformer casing is completely sealed to prevent moisture ingress to ensure the transformer oil does not deteriorate.  The basic function of the oil is to remove heat from the core and coil and it is also part of the insulation system.
