Output Transformer Applications

An output transformer is used in wide variety of applications.  One common application that utilizes an output transformer is an audiophile amplifier, which with their excellent designs have survived many years and recently have begun a resurgence in the market along with the tube industry.  Usually when working with tube amplifiers you also need an output transformer because the voltages in the tube amplifier are too great for your loudspeaker, while the current capability of the tubes are too small to drive your speaker correctly.  In this scenario the main function of the output transformer is to lower the high voltage to safe levels, and to multiply the weak tube currents into larger values.  How the output transformer works is by winding different numbers of turns on the primary (incoming) and secondary (outgoing) side of the output transformer.  The turn ratio between primary and secondary is the major tool performing this job.

Two Main Types of Output Transformers:

 SE Output Transformer
 Push-pull Output Transformer

The different between the two is the SE output transformers are used for single ended amplifiers and the quiescent current of the power triode is not compensated in the transformer core.  The push-pull output transformers are used for push-pull amplifiers and the quiescent currents of the two push-pull power tubes cancel each other out in the core of the output transformer.  With a SE output transformer it includes a gap in the core to deal with the quiescent current while the push-pull version has a closed core with almost no gap in it.  You cannot use a push-pull output transformer on a SE-amplifier.

The output transformer should be able to handle the output power without major losses and distortions, at the intended frequency range.  Many manufacturers do not deliver all the information you need to know if the output transformer is applicable or not.  To figure this you need the lowest frequency the transformer can handle its nominal power.  For example, let’s say you have a output transformers that can handle 50 watts at 30 Hz Then this transformer can handle 50/2 = 25 Watt at 30/1.414 = 21.2 Hz.  Or the transformer can handle 50*2 = 100 Watt at 30*1.414 = 42.4 Hz.  The rule behind all this is: “the power capability doubles when the frequency is an output transformer which can handle 50 Watts at 30 Hz. factor 1.414 larger.  The power capability halves when the lowest frequency is divided by 1.414 (square root 2)”.
