Power Line Conditioner Applications

Power line conditioners are used to smooth out the peaks and dips of common household AC power. They can offer protection and smooth power to electronics, such as computers and sound equipment, and projectors. They function as a surge protector and sometimes take the form of a high end power strip.

A power line conditioner improves the “quality” of the power that is delivered to electrical load equipment. There is no official definition of a power conditioner, but it refers to a device that acts in one or more ways to deliver a voltage of the proper level and to improve power quality such as noise suppression, transient impulse protection.

Power line conditioners can vary in specific size and functionality which is usually determined by the applications. Some provide only minimal voltage regulation while other provides protection for many power quality problems. Power line conditioners can be small enough to be a component in a a machine or big enough to protect a whole factory. Small power conditioners are rated in VA (volt-amps) while large units are rated in kVA (kilo-volt-amps). While no single power conditioner can correct all power quality problems, many can correct a variety of them. With an audio power conditioner it only includes an electronic filter and a surge protector with no voltage regulating capability.

They should not be confused with Isolation Transformers as the degree of isolation is minimal at best.
