Switchgear Use

A switchgear is a combination of electrical disconnects, fuses or circuit breakers used to isolate electrical equipment.  Switchgear units are used to shut down equipment, allowing work to be done and to clear faults downstream.  Most switchgear systems are used within a larger electric power system.

Switchgear System Types

Most switchgear systems are in a metal-enclosure with electrically-operated switching elements, using oil circuit breakers.  Most switchgears are oil-filled equipment, allowing large current to be safely controlled by digital, automatic equipment.  Their main functions are for protection, metering and communications.

Switchgear Provides Isolation & Protection

Switchgears are located anywhere that isolation and protection is needed.  You will find these devices with generators, motors, transformers and substations.  When a switchgear is located in a substation, it is located on both the high voltage and the low voltage side of large power transformers.

Low Voltage Switchgear

When switchgear is located on a low voltage side of the transformers, they are located in a Power Distribution Center.  These buildings usually house smaller, medium-voltage circuit breakers feeding the distribution system.  In Power Control Centers, there are also various relays, meters, and other communication equipment allowing control of the substation.  For industrial applications, a transformer and switchgear line-up may be combined in one location, which is called a unit substation.

High Voltage Switchgear

For high voltage, many switchgear solutions are located outdoors and insulated by air.  This requires a large amount of space.  Gas, oil and vacuum insulated switchgear are used in some cases and do not require the space.  These types of switchgear systems have higher equipment costs than the air ones.

There are many different types of switchgears, such as a simple open air isolator switch or one insulated by another substance like a gas insulated switchgear, where the conductors and contacts are insulated by pressurized sulfur hexafluoride gases or it could be a oil or vacuum insulated switchgear.

Circuit Breaker Switchgear

Circuit breakers are a type of switchgear that are used to interrupt fault currents.  Their design allows them to interrupt currents of many hundreds or thousands of amps.  The quenching of the arc when the contacts open requires careful design.  Circuit breakers can terminate all current flow very quickly, usually between 30 ms and 150 ms depending upon the age and construction of the device.

In many switchgear lineups, they incorporate several different types of devices.  You might see an air-insulated bus, vacuum circuit breaker and manually or automatic operated switches all existing in the same row of cubicles.

The number one function of a switchgear is for protection.  They are used to interrupt power for repairs or maintenance, while maintaining service to unaffected circuits.  Switchgear are also used to provide isolation of circuits from power supplies, and enhance system availability by allowing more than one source to feed a load.
