Common Transformer Circuit
With the most common arrangement of a power
transformer circuit, it has two coils sharing a common iron
core. Because the two coils are not electrically connected, only
the magnetic field between them has any common effect. It is also
possible to have two coils with a ferrite core or with no core at all.
These are still transformers and only their design and construction
varies for their intended application.
When you run power through a transformer the electricity produces a
magnetic field within the transformer. This is usually with the
left side coil in the transformer connected to the source of energy.
This is known as the primary or primary winding of the
transformer circuit. The right hand coil (also known as
the secondary winding) receives the energy magnetically. The amount of
energy or electricity being generated depends on the number of times
the coil is wound around the core. The more times it is wound
around the core the higher the voltage.
Transformer Circuits With Different Core Material
In many transformer circuits the coils
are wound on a core made of a material with high magnetic permeability.
The reason for this is it intensifies the magnetic field induced by the
current in the primary, increasing the transformer’s efficiency.
Silicon steel cores are used for their high magnetic permeability.
The insulated laminations work better than solid cores, by confining
eddy currents, which reduces their losses.
Transformer Circuits Vary By Transformer Type
Transformers are frequently classified according to
their uses. How they are constructed and the transformer
circuit depends on the intended application. Power transformers
are generally used to transmit power at a constant frequency.
Audio transformers are designed to operate over a wide range of
frequencies with a nearly constant ratio of input to output voltage.
Radio frequency transformers are designed to operate within a narrow
range of high frequencies.
