Transformer Pad Options

Transformers pads are designed to provide a flat surface for the placement of a transformer.  There are many different types of transformer pads from concrete, polyethylene, polymer concrete pads, precasted even pads that are made with recycled material.  Before purchasing a transformer pad make sure it meets the utility industry specifications and all city and state requirement.  It needs to meet or exceed the industry requirements for chemical, U.V. flammability, impact and load bearing resistances.

Transformer Pad Placement

Before placing a transformer pad you need to check with utility and state requirements and get all the necessary permits and specifications of the placement of the pad.  Most require a minimum clearance of three feet at sides and rear of transformer pad and eight feet in front of pad.  You will need to have the transformer pad sitting on level ground usually within 1 inch and may require you to have the bed backfill with a granular material that has been compacted prior to placing the transformer pad.  Most pad mount locations need to be at least 10 feet from combustible walls, window, fences, or ventilation opening and 20 feet from any doorway into a building and 25 feet from driveways.  You will also have to take in consideration drainage and local soil conditions and frost action.

Meeting Transformer Pad Placement Regulations

You may need to provide a full set of transformer pad placement plans to your county including site plan with legal description and architectural, mechanical and electrical specification.  Before placing a pad for a pad mounted transformer you need to be sure you do your homework before hand to avoid any regulations and restriction of the location of the pad.
