How A Transformer Rectifier Works

Transformer rectifiers are used for several applications including to convert three phase power to quality DC power for a DC power supply. Regulated output rectifier transformers provide excellent output voltage regulation for varying line and load conditions. Some of the transformer rectifiers are used to comply with military standards and are used in severe environments.  Transformer rectifier have several advantages; when needed they are that they are suitable for powering 28 V DC busses consisting of emergency back-up batteries. Thyristor Transformer Rectifiers vs. Diode Transformer Rectifiers

For electrolysis processes the DC current is supplied by integrating a transformer/rectifier combination.  For large processes several units are used with individual and different phase shifting which are connected in parallel operation to achieve the required process current.  An application that uses this process would be aluminum smelting.  For DC voltages in the lower range, the interphase connection is often preferred, while for a large application, like aluminum smelting, the bridge connections are more economical.  The rectifier can be a thyristor type or a diode type. The thyristor type requires only coarse (stepped), if any voltage regulation in the transformer unit.  This is accomplished by a no-load tap changer. The diode rectifier will require a continuous regulation of the secondary voltage of the transformer.  This is done by a combination of a stepped voltage regulation, applying a coarse-or multicourse-fine on-load tap changer and the fine turning voltage regulation by applying saturable rectifiers on the LV side of the transformer.
