Common Transformer Wiring

The transformer wiring usually consists of two coils called windings which are wrapped around a core.  The transformer works when a source of AC voltage is connected to one of the windings and a load device is connected to the other.  One is call the primary winding which is connected to the source, the other one called the secondary winding which is connected to the load.

The primary is wound in layers directly on a rectangular form, generally the more winding the more voltage the transformer can change.  The wire is usually coated with varnish so that each turn of the winding is insulated from every other turn.  In high-voltage applications, sheets of insulating material are placed between the layers of winding to provide additional insulation.  When the primary winding is completely wound, it wrapped with insulating paper.  The secondary winding is then wound on top of the primary winding.  After the secondary winding is done, it too is covered with insulating paper.

Wire Used In Transformer Wiring

The wire used in transformer wiring are generally a magnet wire, usually it is aluminum or for more efficiency copper wire with a coating of varnish (or some other synthetic coating).  The conducting material used for the winding depends mostly upon the applications.  Smaller transformers are wound with solid copper wire, and then insulated with enamel and sometimes additional insulation.  Large power transformers are often wound with aluminum wire with copper rectangular conductions.  Very high frequency transformers will have winding made of Litz wire which minimizes the skin effect losses in the conductor.

The number of windings on each coil determines the voltage that is carried from the primary to the secondary through the magnetic field.  The number of winding in the primary coil to the number of winding or turns in the secondary coil determines the amount of voltage.  The core is typically iron because it is one of the most efficient in building the magnetic coil.  Once the voltage conversion is made, it is transferred to the lad center and the electrical process continues.
