Variable Transformer Application

How can you adjust a transformer’s voltage range from a few volts to over 100% input voltage?  A variable voltage transformer is an efficient way of changing voltage. They provide a great degree of flexibility in changing the ratio between the primary and secondary coils.  They are very simple to operate, and controls are available for automatic adjustment to maintain voltage output.  The amount of voltage change obtained depends on the type or model of variable transformer used.

Single & Three Phase Variable Transformer Application

Basic single phase variable transformers are rated either 120 volts or 240 volts.  Higher voltage is achieved by combining or ganging 120-volts or 240-volt units.  An example of this if you want a 480 volt single phase application it can be met with two 240-volts variable transformers ganged in a series connection.  For a three phase application, three 120-volt units are ganged in a wye connection which results in a 240 volt line-to-line three phase assembly.  Or you could take three 240 volt units ganged in a wye connection which would give you a 380 volt or a 480 volt line-to-line three phase assembly.  In each of these cases, the individual transformers are identified with the basic voltage rating of either 120 volts or 240 volts.  When variable transformers are connected in an open delta for three phase applications, two 120 volt units are ganged for 120 volt line-to-line usage.  In any of the above voltage applications, higher current requirements are met by paralleling two or more units in the ganged assembly.

Variable Transformer Construction

Most variable transformer are constructed as a toroidal, or doughnut shaped transformer with a magnet steel core.  A single layer of enamel covered magnet wire is tightly wound around the core.  Each end of the winding is securely fastened and the entire winding is lacquered locking the winding to the core.  A track then is carefully machined around the toroid periphery.  A carbon brush is positioned to be rotated around this track, this brings variable output voltage to separate terminal.

Variable Transformer Output

Variable transformers mostly are used as auto-transformers allowing units to be wired in a configuration which yields a higher voltage out than applied as input voltage.  The typically increase in voltage is usually around 15% above the applied voltage, where output can be varied between 0 volts and 15% above the input voltage.
